A Parent's Guide to Therianthropy: What You Need to Know
If your child has told you they're a therian, you might have questions and concerns. That's completely natural. This guide is written for parents and caregivers who want to understand what therianthropy is, how to support their child, and what to watch for.
Understanding What Your Child Is Telling You
When your child says they're a therian, they're telling you that they experience a deep, persistent identification with a non-human animal. This is not the same as pretending to be an animal, a phase that will necessarily pass, a sign of mental illness, or the result of social media influence (though they may have discovered the term online). Therianthropy has existed as a recognized identity experience since at least the 1990s, long before social media. For your child, this is likely something they've felt for a long time and have finally found the words to express. The fact that they're telling you shows trust.
How to Be Supportive
The most important thing you can do is listen without judgment. Ask open-ended questions: 'Can you tell me more about what that feels like?' 'When did you first start feeling this way?' Let them explain in their own words. Avoid dismissing their experience as silly or attention-seeking. Research therianthropy so you can have informed conversations. You don't have to fully understand the experience to support your child through it. Practical support might include allowing them to wear therian gear at home, respecting their privacy about their identity, and being open to learning together.
Common Concerns Addressed
Will they grow out of it? Maybe, maybe not β and either outcome is okay. Some people identify as therians throughout their lives, others don't. Pressuring them to 'grow out of it' is more harmful than letting the experience unfold naturally. Is it a mental health issue? Therianthropy itself is not a mental illness. However, like anyone, therians can experience related challenges like species dysphoria or social anxiety. Are they being influenced by the internet? While online communities help therians find language for their experience, the underlying feelings typically predate their online discovery. Is it safe? Therian activities like quadrobics and wearing gear are generally safe when done mindfully.
Setting Healthy Boundaries
Supporting your child doesn't mean having no boundaries. Reasonable boundaries might include: age-appropriate online activity (knowing which platforms they use, reviewing privacy settings), balancing therian activities with responsibilities (school, chores, social obligations), ensuring physical safety during quadrobics (proper surfaces, warm-ups, supervision for younger children), and open communication about their community interactions. Frame boundaries as coming from care, not disapproval. For example: 'I want to make sure you're safe online' rather than 'You spend too much time on that therian stuff.'
When to Seek Additional Help
Most therian young people are happy, healthy, and well-adjusted. However, consider seeking professional support if your child shows signs of significant distress (persistent sadness, withdrawal, self-harm), if species dysphoria is severely impacting their daily functioning, if they're being bullied and struggling to cope, or if you notice concerning changes in behavior unrelated to their therian identity. Look for a therapist who is open-minded about identity experiences β you want someone who will support your child's wellbeing without pathologizing their identity. The goal isn't to 'fix' therianthropy but to ensure your child has the tools to navigate their experience healthily.
